Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are the vehicle's "black box" records. In this lecture, we analyze the structure of P, B, C, and U codes. You will learn how the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors system health and at what point it decides to throw a code. We explore the "Freeze Frame" data—the snapshot of vehicle conditions (RPM, Speed, Temperature) at the exact moment a fault occurred.

From a forensic perspective, DTCs are invaluable evidence. They can prove if a vehicle was over-revved, if a sensor was disconnected to hide a fault, or if the car was involved in a collision. We will also cover the Unified Diagnostic Services (UDS) protocol (ISO 14229), which is the language used by professional scan tools to request specific data from the ECU. You will learn how to craft custom "Request" packets to pull hidden data streams that standard consumer-grade OBD-II scanners often miss.
