Capturing data on a high-speed bus requires precision hardware. In this lecture, we explore the different tiers of sniffing tools, from the low-cost ELM327 to high-end interfaces like the Vector CANcase. We focus heavily on the "Passive Sniffing" methodology—interfacing with the bus in a way that does not send any "Ack" (Acknowledge) bits, which could potentially interfere with the vehicle's safety systems.

We will specifically look at the ESP32 and MCP2515 CAN controller setup, which is popular for custom forensic tools. You will learn about "Silent Mode" in CAN controllers and why it is the gold standard for forensic acquisition. We also cover the physical connection points beyond the OBD-II port, such as tapping directly into the wiring loom or using inductive "contactless" readers. By the end of this lecture, you will have a clear blueprint for building or selecting the right hardware interface for any automotive forensic task.
