Chip tuning is the art and science of modifying an ECU’s firmware to alter performance. In this lecture, we explore "Maps"—the look-up tables the ECU uses to determine fuel injection, ignition timing, and boost pressure. We discuss the process of "Reading" a file from the ECU, modifying the hex values or maps, and "Writing" (flashing) it back.

We approach this from an engineering and forensic standpoint: How can you tell if a car has been "mapped"? We look at checksums and flash counters—security measures designed to prevent unauthorized tampering. Understanding the tuning process is essential for forensics because a modified ECU can drastically change a vehicle's behavior in ways the original manufacturer didn't intend. We will discuss the tools used in the industry (like KESS or AutoTuner) and how these interfaces interact with the microcontroller's bootloader.
