Welcome to the core of automotive networking. This lecture serves as the technical gateway into the world of the Controller Area Network (CAN). We begin by exploring why CAN remains the industry standard despite the rise of Automotive Ethernet. You will learn about the ISO 11898 standard, which defines the data link layer and physical signaling. We discuss the multi-master, broadcast serial bus architecture that allows Electronic Control Units (ECUs) to communicate without a central host.

For the Automotive engineer, understanding this architecture is vital. We examine the topology of the bus, focusing on the twisted-pair wiring (CAN High and CAN Low) designed to cancel out electromagnetic interference—a common hurdle in forensic data acquisition. By the end of this session, you will be able to identify the physical components of a vehicle network and understand the role of termination resistors in maintaining signal integrity. This lecture sets the stage for advanced bus sniffing and packet injection by ensuring you have a "ground-up" understanding of the network you are about to exploit and analyze.
